As I was walking out of my Media and Everyday life class, I
was dreading to go to this thing called New Student Convocation. I had no idea
what to expect and wasn’t really looking forward to spending an hour of my
birthday listening to someone talk about stuff we’ve heard 10,000 times before. To say the least, I was pleasantly surprised.
As I sat in the auditorium full of my 1370 freshman classmates, graduation
music began to play. It had just occurred to me that this convocation was an
induction ceremony into the class of 2017. Listening to the music just a few
months prior; it all hit me in that seat. I was officially not only an adult, but
also a college student. The new student convocation
would be considered the starting mark of my Southern Academic Community.
The first speaker spoke about the rich array of opportunities
that Southern Connecticut State University has to offer. These opportunities
include the following: making new friends, forming relationships with our
professors, getting involved in sports and school clubs. Ms. Chelsea
Schillizzi, the senior class president, spoke of her experience at Southern and
it was as if she was only talking to me in the auditorium. This was my chance
to shine brighter than I did in high school. On this campus, there was a place
for me. I belong. I learned through this presentation that we must pay
attention to the world that we live in.
By being consciously aware of what is going on in this world; this will
help me make a lasting impression on the world that I live in. There is a huge window of occasions where it
would be possible for me to get involved in teamwork building activities too. This
is my chance to take a risk and break out of my comfort zone in connecting with
people from many different diversities. College is the first stepping-stone to
life, so let us grow!
